A história do Paulista

O primeiro Campeonato Paulista foi organizado em 1902 pela Liga Paulista de Foot-Ball (LPF), entidade fundada em 1901, e contou com 10 equipes da capital. Na década de 1910, aconteceu a primeira cisão no futebol paulista, que resultou na fundação da Associação Paulista de Esportes Atléticos (APEA).

A nova entidade, que organizou seu primeiro campeonato paralelo ao torneio da LPF em 1913, defendia uma competição menos elitista. Após quatro temporadas com duas edições paralelas, a APEA prevaleceu sobre a LPF, que acabou extinta. A maior parte dos seus clubes da LPF disputaria o torneio que se considera atualmente a Segunda Divisão.
