Campinas, SP, 17 – Além de divulgar as datas e novo formato do Mundial de Clubes para 2025, com 32 times, a Fifa explicou neste domingo que continuará realizando um torneio anual entre continentes. Trata-se da Copa Intercontinental, que será disputada já a partir de 2024, dentro de uma configuração mais parecida com a do atual Mundial, mas com mudanças importantes.
Um dos principais pontos é que o campeão da Liga dos Campeões tem vaga garantida na final. Já o vencedor da Libertadores terá de passar por dois adversários para chegar à decisão, diferentemente do formato vigente, em que o representante sul-americano entra direto na semifinal.
O primeiro desafio do campeão da América do Sul será contra o vencedor da Copa dos Campeões da Concacaf, em jogo único no estádio de um dos clubes. O mando será por sorteio na primeira edição e passará a ser alternado nos anos seguintes. O time que vencer avançará para uma nova fase, na qual enfrentará o sobrevivente de outra chave, envolvendo os representantes dos demais continentes.
Tal chave terá duas fases. A primeira colocará o vencedor da Oceania para enfrentar o campeão da África ou o campeão da Ásia. Na edição inaugural, será definido por sorteio qual time, entre o representante africano e o asiático, jogará contra os oceânicos, e qual avançará direto para a segunda fase e aguardará o vencedor da primeira. A partir das próxima edições, com base na ordem sorteada, África e Ásia passam a se alternar, ano a ano, entre disputar a primeira fase e entrar diretamente na segunda.
De acordo com a Fifa, as primeiras etapas serão agendas após consulta com os clubes e as confederações, mas as datas das últimas fases já estão decididas. O penúltimo jogo, denominado oficialmente como playoff e que definirá o adversário do campeão da Liga dos Campeões, será realizado no dia 14 de dezembro de 2024 em sede neutra. Já a final está maçada para dia 18 de dezembro de 2024, também em sede neutra.

A Copa Intercontinental foi criada para compensar o novo formato do Mundial de Clubes, que passará a ser disputado a cada quatro anos. A primeira edição do novo Mundial, com 32 clubes, será realizada entre 15 de junho e 13 de julho, nos Estados Unidos, em meio ao calendário brasileiro. Últimos três campeões da Copa Libertadores, Fluminense, Flamengo e Palmeiras, já estão garantidos. O Brasil ainda poderá colocar um quarto classificado, desde que um time diferente desses três conquiste a Libertadores de 2024.
