Campinas, SP, 26 – O Boca Juniors anunciou, nesta terça-feira, Diego Martínez como novo técnico, que deve iniciar o trabalho no clube no dia 2 de janeiro.
O time de Buenos Aires já havia manifestado interesse no treinador em abril, após a saída de Hugo Ibarra, mas Martinez, à época no comando do Tigre, não foi liberado pelo clube.
Com a vitória de Juan Román Riquelme na eleição presidencial do Boca Juniors, a chegada de Martínez parecia questão de tempo. Riquelme já era dirigente do clube quando houve o primeiro contato com o técnico.
Martínez trabalhou nas categorias de base do Boca, quando dirigiu garotos que hoje estão no time principal: Colo Barco, Equi Fernández, Luca Langoni, Exequiel Zeballos e Chelo Weigandt. Deixou La Bombonera em 2015 para se aventurar no futebol profissional.
Seu principal trabalho foi no Tigre, clube que levou à Primeira Divisão e no qual foi vice-campeão da Copa da Liga de 2021. Por esse histórico, a direção do clube não quis deixá-lo ir quando Riquelme foi procurá-lo.
Em novembro, o ex-jogador e então candidato voltou a telefonar para Martínez. O técnico então decidiu pedir demissão do Huracán, onde estava trabalhando, mesmo com a eleição do Boca indefinida.
O ídolo do clube se elegeu presidente em 18 de dezembro. E nesta terça aconteceu o anúncio oficial de Diego Martínez como técnico do Boca Juniors.
