Apenas uma semana depois de Sepp Blatter admitir que o Catar não deveria ter conquistado a Copa do Mundo em primeiro lugar, os anfitriões de 2022 têm a distinta honra de dar início à última edição do torneio, já que as ligas nacionais fazem uma pausa para o melhores do mundo para se reunir no Oriente Médio.

A controvérsia aumentou desde que o Catar recebeu os direitos de hospedagem da Copa do Mundo de 2022 em 2010, mas em campo, Sanchez Bas e sua safra de futuros criadores de história simplesmente tentaram dar a si mesmos o melhor possibilidade de classificação para o Grupo A.

Enfrentar o Senegal, campeão da Copa das Nações Africanas, e a Holanda, finalista da Copa do Mundo de 2010, é realmente um batismo de fogo para a 50ª nação do ranking mundial, mas eles participaram de quatro amistosos desde outubro e venceram todos os quatro.

O Catar não foi o único país a se envolver em polêmica antes da primeira bola ser chutada na Copa do Mundo, já que o Equador estava enfrentando a ameaça de expulsão do torneio após escalar um jogador inelegível nas eliminatórias.

Nada aconteceu, porém, e a nação sul-americana agora se prepara para voltar à final do jogo depois de perder uma vaga na Rússia 2018, mas fazer ondas na Copa do Mundo não tem sido seu forte até agora.

O Equador já disputou três edições da competição em 2002, 2006 e 2014, mas apenas uma vez passou da fase de grupos, sendo eliminado nas oitavas de final há 16 anos, o que também representa a única vez em que conquistou sua primeira partida do torneio.

Os jogos sem sofrer golos também têm sido o tema dos homens de Gustavo Alfaro no período de aquecimento, já que o Equador registrou seis derrotas em seis jogos desde o início de junho, mas só conseguiu balançar as redes duas vezes, com quatro de essas seis partidas terminando em 0-0.

Equador e Iraque enfrentaram o último empate sem gols do Tricolor no último sábado, e o Catar já enfrentou o sul-americano três vezes em casa, com uma vitória, um empate e uma derrota contra o time que quer estragar o clima de festa.
